Welcome to MBARS!
Thank you for visiting MBARS, The Morecambe Bay Amateur Radio Site. The site follows no real direction other than to provide a portal for people interested in the pastime of amateur radio.
The site will be member driven and therefore will rely upon people joining the site and using the forums or adding news content.
The site is always a work in progress.
Although the site is based around the Morecambe/Lancaster area, anyone with a interest in amateur radio is welcome to join, no matter where you are from. We value input from anyone interested in our wonderful hobby.

Incursions by churches on amateur radio bands
The Irish Radio Transmitters Society asks that radio amateurs and short wave listeners keep a listening watch around 28.265MHz FM as there have been incursions by churches on this frequency heard throughout Europe at up to 5 and 9 plus 20dB.
The IRTS is collecting information on these broadcasts to send to the national regulator, ComReg.
All information can be sent to Ger McNamara, EI4GXB who is the IRTS IARUMS co-ordinator by e-mail to

Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth

Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth
Rumbles without sound
Auroras rain down
Magnetic fields shake
Beware the spacequake
July 27, 2010: Researchers using NASA's fleet of five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a form of space weather that packs the punch of an earthquake and plays a key role in sparking bright Northern Lights. They call it "the spacequake."
A spacequake is a temblor in Earth's magnetic field. It is felt most strongly in Earth orbit, but is not exclusive to space. The effects can reach all the way down to the surface of Earth itself.
"Magnetic reverberations have been detected at ground stations all around the globe, much like seismic detectors measure a large earthquake," says THEMIS principal investigator Vassilis Angelopoulos of UCLA.
It's an apt analogy because "the total energy in a spacequake can rival that of a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake," according to Evgeny Panov of the Space Research Institute in Austria. Panov is first author of a paper reporting the results in the April 2010 issue of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL).
In 2007, THEMIS discovered the precursors of spacequakes. The action begins in Earth's magnetic tail, which is stretched out like a windsock by the million mph solar wind. Sometimes the tail can become so stretched and tension-filled, it snaps back like an over-torqued rubber band. Solar wind plasma trapped in the tail hurtles toward Earth. On more than one occasion, the five THEMIS spacecraft were in the line of fire when these "plasma jets" swept by. Clearly, the jets were going to hit Earth. But what would happen then? The fleet moved closer to the planet to find out.
"Now we know," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Plasma jets trigger spacequakes."

In 2013, the earth will be attacked from space
Posted by paul on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 (15:05:18) (14 reads)
In 2013, the earth will be attacked from space, with one possible outcome being mind-bogglingly severe disruption to our tech-centric way of life.
"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years, we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity," says Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms."
Fisher's comments came during the run-up to last week's Space Weather Enterprise Forum 2010, at which scientists gathered to discuss how to prepare for the massive solar storms set to strike the earth in 2013.
"We know it is coming but we don’t know how bad it is going to be," Fischer told the Daily Telegraph. "It will disrupt communication devices such as satellites and car navigations, air travel, the banking system, our computers, everything that is electronic. It will cause major problems for the world."

24-hour Scottish Islands Amateur Radio Challenge
Bob, GM0DEQ will be activating up to 15 Scottish islands within 24 hours in June using a sea plane as transport.
His callsign will be GB4DTD (Dawn To Dusk).
Activity will be on the HF bands, 40-10 metres.
QSL via GM0DEQ.
The island list is subject to change due to a few factors governing their sea plane transport. The departure date will be subject to WX too, and will be from Monday, 14th June 2010, onwards as close to the longest day to maximize daylight flying.
List of islands:
Islay (EU-008, IOSA NH22, SCOTIA CS25, WLOTA LH-1826); Jura (EU-008, IOSA NH21, SCOTIA CS28, WLOTA LH-3078); Colonsay (EU-008, IOSA NH19, SCOTIA DI05, WLOTA LH-1574);
