Incursions by churches on amateur radio bands

The Irish Radio Transmitters Society asks that radio amateurs and short wave listeners keep a listening watch around 28.265MHz FM as there have been incursions by churches on this frequency heard throughout Europe at up to 5 and 9 plus 20dB. The IRTS is collecting information on these broadcasts to send to the national regulator, ComReg. All information can be sent to Ger McNamara, EI4GXB who is the IRTS IARUMS co-ordinator by e-mail to ei4gxbgmail

Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth

Spacequakes Rumble Near Earth

Rumbles without sound
Auroras rain down
Magnetic fields shake
Beware the spacequake

July 27, 2010: Researchers using NASA's fleet of five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a form of space weather that packs the punch of an earthquake and plays a key role in sparking bright Northern Lights. They call it "the spacequake."

A spacequake is a temblor in Earth's magnetic field. It is felt most strongly in Earth orbit, but is not exclusive to space. The effects can reach all the way down to the surface of Earth itself.

"Magnetic reverberations have been detected at ground stations all around the globe, much like seismic detectors measure a large earthquake," says THEMIS principal investigator Vassilis Angelopoulos of UCLA.

It's an apt analogy because "the total energy in a spacequake can rival that of a magnitude 5 or 6 earthquake," according to Evgeny Panov of the Space Research Institute in Austria. Panov is first author of a paper reporting the results in the April 2010 issue of Geophysical Research Letters (GRL).

In 2007, THEMIS discovered the precursors of spacequakes. The action begins in Earth's magnetic tail, which is stretched out like a windsock by the million mph solar wind. Sometimes the tail can become so stretched and tension-filled, it snaps back like an over-torqued rubber band. Solar wind plasma trapped in the tail hurtles toward Earth. On more than one occasion, the five THEMIS spacecraft were in the line of fire when these "plasma jets" swept by. Clearly, the jets were going to hit Earth. But what would happen then? The fleet moved closer to the planet to find out.

"Now we know," says THEMIS project scientist David Sibeck of the Goddard Space Flight Center. "Plasma jets trigger spacequakes."

France Says D-Star Ham Radio Mode Is Illegal

France Says D-Star Ham Radio Mode Is Illegal

"Citing 'national security concerns,' the French Autorité de Régulation des Communications Électroniques et des Postes (ARCEP, France's equivalent of the US's FCC) has ruled that D-Star, an amateur radio digital signal mode used world-wide, is illegal because it could allow operators to connect to the Internet. The ARCEP also cites alleged concerns regarding cryptography and national security as well as the use of a proprietary codec. While it's true that the D-Star codec is proprietary, its owner has openly licensed it (for a fee, of course) to any manufacturer who wants to build it into their equipment. Any licensed amateur radio operator who lives within the EU can sign an online petition protesting this decision."

In 2013, the earth will be attacked from space

Posted by paul on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 (15:05:18) (14 reads)

In 2013, the earth will be attacked from space, with one possible outcome being mind-bogglingly severe disruption to our tech-centric way of life.

"The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years, we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity," says Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms."

Fisher's comments came during the run-up to last week's Space Weather Enterprise Forum 2010, at which scientists gathered to discuss how to prepare for the massive solar storms set to strike the earth in 2013.

"We know it is coming but we don’t know how bad it is going to be," Fischer told the Daily Telegraph. "It will disrupt communication devices such as satellites and car navigations, air travel, the banking system, our computers, everything that is electronic. It will cause major problems for the world."

New 5MHz NoV licences available

Posted by paul on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 (14:57:53) (25 reads)

Following a request by the RSGB last November, Ofcom announced on 14 May they were able to permit operation of stations by amateur radio Full licensees, using specified frequencies in the 5MHz experimental band, after the existing NoV expired on 30 June 2010 and until 30 June 2015. This follows Ofcom gaining consent from the Ministry of Defence for continued amateur experimentation on these channels. The terms and conditions of the new NoV remain unchanged. Note that existing NoV holders, as well as Full licensees who have not previously held a 5MHz NoV, wishing to operate in the 5MHz experimental band after 30 June 2010 must obtain a new NoV by completing an updated application form that is available on Ofcom's website. The form can be found at www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/licensing/classes/amateur/5mhz/
